The calendar of the Everyday by
Liani van der Westhuizen

Liani van der Westhuizen is an architect and design educator at the Spier Architectural arts. She shows her passion for architecture in one of her work called ‘Calendar of the Everyday’, a year long photo essay. Photographs taken in Cape Town and as you can see her work has an architectural influence. However she did not do all of this to be looked as your regular city photos, her project was to celebrate the ordinary everyday experience of the Mother City in a visual way; Cape Town city life inspired Liani van der Westhuizen. She also wanted to offer a unique perspective by showing the city in a unique way of array of photos, which will be available on online websites like for example Google.

I envy how she managed to capture the design essence of how Cape Town is a will change and be in the next coming years. Liani van der Westhuizen said‘A city’s character is made of more than its physical features and infrastructure’. She also mentioned
A city’s urban identity comes from its relation to the everyday world. Calendar of the Everyday depicts this distinctive ‘flow’ of Cape Town city life, embracing its rhythms, contours, personal histories, eccentricities and contradictions, beyond tourist traps and well-known natural beauty”.
