Contextual Portfolio

Workshop Week

Guest Lecturer Gary Hustwit

Gary Huswit was an important guest lecturer in workshop week because we watched one of his workfor our new project called 'New Visual Language', in relation to modernism and post-modernism.

Gary Hustwit is a photographer and an independent filmamer in New York and London. He produced many documentaries, he is most famous for the film he produced and directed in 2007 called Helvetica. In the lecture he spoke about his design trilogy of film documentaries Helvetica, Urbanized and objectified. These films were about graphic design, typography, urban planning, architecture and industrial design. People were curious about design and how it impacts us.

Huswit encouraged and urged us to pursue our ideas or planning we scared to take in the future because there is not point in being worried if you think it could be great, for all we knew there may be someone out there thinking about the same idea as you and they will be successful for it.

Huswit spoke about design trilogy films how they were a success because he gave his idea a try. Instead of asking participants simple questions for simple answers, he allowed them to speak freely about their own experience and thoughts and not always what a person from past thoughts were. He asked questions a designer wouldn't and his films will show you the process of the designs. He continued on "I like the idea of showing how these designs can affect our lives and showing the people who are responsible them".

I found his lecture to be very inspirational and helpful.
