It started with cave painting, a way of communicating as far back as 20,000  B.C. It was like a way to  record stories or keeping a record of something using pictogram which is using very simple drawings using everyday objects. 

Pictography


A pictogram also known as pictograph, pictogramme, picto or 'icon', is a ideogram. A Symbol which is an image that represents a concept or object. These symbols would resemble them having a distinctive part relating to the concept or object. They are everywhere we look for example the representational signs we see on the road or public places such as toilet symbols. 



Ideogram

Ideogram can also be called ideograph, is a character or a symbol that represent ideas or a particular things without the need to express the pronunciation of the word. A good a example of this is the traffics signs commonly used for parking. Another good example are Chinese, Korean and Japanese characters.  


Phonogram

Phonogram is a written symbol representing a speech sound, word, syllable and morpheme.
